National treasure and internationally celebrated film critic David Stratton returns to the screen with his new online video series DAVID STRATTON RECOMMENDS.
Australia’s most famous film reviewer is back!
Available to view via Cinema Nova’s Facebook and YouTube
pages from today, David Stratton Recommends will be an independent, weekly
review series that finds Australia’s preeminent movie critic focusing his
attention on quality, independent and Australian cinema releases of his
choosing.
Cinema Nova, in collaboration with Hayden Orpheum Cinema in
Sydney and Luna Palace Cinemas in Perth, are delighted to bring David back to
our screens with his trusted (and occasionally controversial!) film criticism.
The online film review series can be enjoyed on-the-move, anytime, anywhere.
David Stratton says “I’m
very happy to be able to provide comments on some of the more interesting films
playing in Australia’s independent cinemas. Since ABC TV’s At The Movies came to an end in 2014
I’ve very often been told this sort of commentary is missed, and while I can’t
bring Margaret Pomeranz along with me for these brief video reviews I hope they
will prove useful and illuminating for serious cinema-goers.”
David Stratton migrated to Australia in 1963 and was
appointed director of the Sydney Film Festival in 1966 where he stayed for 18
years. In 1986 he began hosting The Movie Show on SBS, in partnership with film
critic Margaret Pomeranz. In 2004, the pair moved to ABC TV where they hosted
At The Movies until 2014. David has also worked as a film critic for Variety
and has authored three books. In the 2015 Australia Day Honours he was
presented the award of Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of
Australia. He has served on the International Critics Jury in Cannes and on the
Competition Jury in Venice. He currently reviews for The Australian newspaper
and is lecturing in Film History at the University of Sydney.
Cinema Nova’s General Manager, Kristian Connelly, says “David Stratton has guided movie-goers for
decades with his peerless advice and perspective on cinema. It is with great
pleasure that we not only welcome him back to the screen, but collaborate with
him on David Stratton Recommends.”
David Stratton Recommends kicks off Wednesday May 31 with
his reviews of 20th Century Women, from director Mike Mills, and the
gripping Australian true-crime drama Hounds Of Love.
